Ketosis is a state of the body when your body is running on something called ketone bodies to power itself instead of carbohydrates/sugar. Normally, the body breaks down carbohydrates through a process called glycolysis. The resulting sugars are used for your energy cycles. Traditionally, ketone bodies are used as a fuel when the body runs out of sugar and can be seen in individuals who have fasted and/or haven’t eaten in several hours. You can also get the body into a state of ketosis by eating very little amounts of carbohydrates throughout the day.

How Does This Help Me?

So you may have heard the buzzword of “ketosis” and wondered if it could help you. The research is still coming out, but so far it’s promising for many different conditions:

And more!

How Do I Try This Ketosis???

Eating a very low carbohydrate-based diet is one way. You’ll eat a majority of fat, with a moderate amount of protein and a very small amount (under 30g of carbohydrates daily) and your body will naturally work it’s way into a ketogenic state. You may have been told that low fat diets are best, or even that fat causes you to be fat! This is not only backwards and incorrect, but it’s also very out-dated information. Fat is essential for all of your cells and for hormone production, among many other things.

The other way to get into ketosis quickly is through the use of something called an exogenous ketone salt. This is where the supplement industry comes into play! Ketone supplements have isolated a fancy chemical called beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the active ingredient to get you into a state of ketosis.

What should you look for in a ketone supplement? Personally, I want to see a few things:

  1. How much BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate) is actually in a serving? Not all companies disclose this on the label, so you don’t really know how much of the active ingredient you are getting. Usually anything over 10g per serving is good!
  2. What OTHER ingredients are in the supplement? I do whatever I can to stay away from artificial sweeteners or other fillers.
  3. Not a lot of caffeine (if any!) If the product is good, you’ll see a nice increase in cognitive function, focus and attention without the need for extra caffeine.

In this particular video series, I reviewed a supplement called Perfect Keto. I’ve tried several and I like this one the best. It smells good, tastes good and I like the effects! Although I have one more brand coming so check back here for updates
